About US
We believe in good, honest, classic American diner food. You come to The Purple Turtle for a reason: our juicy burgers, our crispy hand-dipped halibut, those famous onion rings, and, of course, our legendary milkshakes.
From My Heart to Your Plate: The Enduring Legacy of The Purple Turtle
You know, there are some things you just fall in love with and never let go. For me, that’s The Purple Turtle. I’m Steve Cobbley, and I’ve been a part of this amazing place since 1976. That’s nearly 50 years! From starting out as a kid washing dishes to eventually becoming Owner, every day here feels like coming home.
A Dream That Became Our Reality
It all started with a dream, believe it or not. Lloyd Ash, the original owner, had this recurring vision in the late 60s about a wildly successful restaurant right here on this very corner in Pleasant Grove. The only detail he remembered was the name: The Purple Turtle. Call it fate, call it inspiration, but in January 1968, he opened our doors, and a legend was born. And honestly, it’s been a dream come true for all of us ever since.
Decades of Deliciousness, Rooted in Tradition
We’ve always stuck to our guns here. We believe in good, honest, classic American diner food. You come to The Purple Turtle for a reason: our juicy burgers, our crispy hand-dipped halibut, those famous onion rings (seriously, people buy our tartar sauce by the cup – it’s that good!), and, of course, our legendary milkshakes. It’s the taste of nostalgia, a flavor that transports you back to simpler times.
Clark Evans, another long-timer, started here in ’68 and became an owner in ’79. And me? I’ve seen generations come through these doors. Kids who worked their first jobs here, then brought their own kids for a burger, and now those kids are bringing their kids. That continuity, that sense of family, is what makes The Purple Turtle so special. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a living, breathing part of Pleasant Grove’s story.
More Than Just a Meal: It’s Our Community
We’ve been through a lot together, too. When we had that fire in 2014, it was tough. But the way our community rallied around us, showing their support, it was truly humbling. It just reinforced what we already knew: The Purple Turtle isn’t just about what’s on the menu; it’s a hub. It’s where first dates happen, where high school teams celebrate big wins, and where families gather for a comforting meal. We’ve seen countless memories made within these walls, and that’s something I cherish more than anything.
Our Recipe for Enduring Success
People often ask what keeps us going after all these years. For me, it boils down to a few simple things:
- Timeless Food: We don’t chase fads. We focus on doing what we do best, consistently and with care.
- Generational Loyalty: We’re a tradition. Kids grow up with us, and they bring their own families to share that experience.
- Community First: We’re woven into the fabric of Pleasant Grove. We’re here for our neighbors, and they’re here for us.
- Our People: Many of us have been here for decades. There’s a passion and dedication among the staff that you can feel the moment you walk in.
In a world that’s always changing, The Purple Turtle stands as a constant. It’s a place where you can count on a great meal, a friendly face, and a feeling of home. So, next time you’re in Pleasant Grove, stop by. Let us serve you a little slice of our history, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll become a part of your story too.
